Second most expensive signing - Rafael Leão joins Galatasaray after rejecting Aston Villa

After a dramatic few days with twists and turns, Galatasaray have won the race for Rafael Leão. On Friday morning, it seemed that Aston Villa were in the driving seat for the Portugal international with Unai Emery pushing for his signature but they're set to miss out on another priority target. But the Portuguese winger ultimately decided to join the Turkish giants and was rewarded with a hero's welcome in Istanbul on Saturday.

AC Milan decided to cash in on Leao after a disappointing few seasons and they had reached agreements with both Galatasaray and Villa. Leao was left with the decision over the next chapter in his career and opted to join a star-studded squad in Türkiye. It's understood that Galatasaray will pay an initial €45 million for the 27-year-old, with a further €5m in potential add-ons.

Leao’s career has stalled in recent years and that’s respectfully why Europe’s premier clubs haven’t pursued him this summer, despite the fact he’s available for a modest fee. The Portugal winger has been the figurehead for a period of underachievement at AC Milan and a fresh challenge could be the spark to reignite his career.

Leao represents Galatasaray’s second most expensive signing in history, behind Victor Osimhen’s €75m move from Napoli last summer. Fenerbahce - also linked with Leao this summer - have invested heavily as they aim to end a long wait for a Super Lig title and Gala want a statement signing.
