The Scottish FA perhaps pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the summer when they suddenly announced the appointment of a new national team manager on Sunday evening. With no prior reports or rumours, Sébastien Pocognoli was confirmed as the the direct successor to Steve Clarke after signing a two-year contract with the Scottish FA.

“When I first heard of the interest, I was immediately excited about the opportunity,” said the 39-year-old Belgian tactician. “Scotland’s supporters are famous for their passion – most recently at the World Cup in the USA - and I have experienced it myself as a player for Belgium when we played in 2013. Along with my coaching staff, I will do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of and build on the success that has been achieved already by my predecessor.” But who exactly is Pocognoli? With expert insight from our global editorial team, Transfermarkt can offer some background information on the new Scotland boss.

Earning his stripes in Belgium

At just 39 years of age, it’s clear that Pocognoli is not an experienced head coach. However, after only earning his first full-time senior position in football management two years ago, he’s already garnered a solid back catalogue of work. After working as a youth coach in Belgian football, he was appointed first-team head coach of Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2024. Despite being a left-field appointment, Pocognoli quickly rose to the occasion and averaged an impressive 1.91 points per game in all competitions, alongside a league title in his solitary season with the club - the club’s first in 90 years.

“It certainly came as a surprise when he was appointed at Union, given that he had never worked at first-team level before,” recalls Belgian Area Manager, Bart Tamsyn. “Union also got off to a shaky start that season, but once November came around, he got the team firing on all cylinders and led them to the title. He quickly adapted to Union’s standard style of play: three centre-backs with an aggressive defensive midfielder in front, fast wingbacks and two strong wingers if possible. Managing a national team is always different from working at club level, but I do think that the Scottish style of physical and direct play fits in well with Union’s way of playing.”

Things not going to plan in Monaco

Following just 69 games in the job in Belgium, Pocognoli then departed for Monaco, where he replaced Adi Hütter at the Ligue 1 giants. However, things didn’t exactly go to plan for the young head coach, as he averaged just 1.50 points per game in 38 games across all competitions for Monaco and could only guide the club to seventh in the French top-flight - a far cry from their third-place finish the season before under Pocognoli’s predecessor and their worst points tally (54 points) in seven seasons. But there were mitigating circumstances that perhaps limited the young Belgian’s influence at the French club.

Prior to Pocognoli arriving at Monaco, the club had sold just under €150 million worth of first-team players in the summer transfer window - including key attacking players like Eliesse Ben Seghir, George Ilenikhena and Breel Embolo, as well as important defensive players like midfielder Soungoutou Magassa and Wilfried Singo. "Monaco seems to have lost his way in recent years. Last summer, they kept Hutter, while his results were not universally accepted, and let a lot of players leave without replacing them," confirmed Joachim Duran, French Content Manager at Transfermarkt. "In other words, Monaco didnt have the squad for its ambitions, and that was still the case after the winter window, when just Wout Faes and Simon Adingra arrived. It was not enough. So Pocognoli worked with what he, which was ultimately not that much."

Can he replace Steve Clarke at Scotland?

If Pocognoli thought the pressure was high in Belgium or Monaco, it'll pale in comparison to the scrutiny he'll come under at Hampden when Scotland kick off their UEFA Nations League campaign against Slovenia in late September. While Clarke's popularity among Scotland supporters may have diminished in recent years, he still guided the European minnows to back-to-back European Championships and their first World Cup since 1998. Pocognoli will be tasked with emulating that record, but will have to do so without a number of star players from Clarke's tenure, who have since retired from international football or are on the cusp of doing so.
